The staff at Sea of Peace

The board of directors of Sea of Peace Retreat Center announces the appointment of three new staff directors: Sister Mary Lequier, OP, Sister Carol Dulka, OP and Sister Sharon Culhane, OP. These Adrian Dominican Sisters from Michigan look forward to a ministry of hospitality—welcoming and encouraging people in their spiritual journey at Sea of Peace.

Sister Sharon, educator and artist, worked 15 years in Chicago teaching and ministering programs for the poor and underserved. She came to South Carolina in 1975 to continue her ministry with the poor in McClellanville, Columbia, Daufuskie Island and Kingstree.

Sister Carol, educator and religious educator for 14 years in Michigan, came to South Carolina to begin a ministry to rural indigenous people. She developed an outreach program for the Edisto Kusso, Natchez Indian adults, Edisto Senior Citizens Services and Cultural Festival Committee. She enjoys playing softball with the Primetimers, a team of women over the age of 60.

Sister Mary, elementary principal, educator and religious educator in Michigan for 20 years, moved to Dorchester County, SC in 1977 to perform outreach work with groups like the Edisto Indians. She ran a District II Satellite Program in Ridgeville for 25 years, and she established Edisto Connection with the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Agency for Edisto Indian teens. She directs two Edisto Indian Senior Center feeding sites.

Sea of Peace, at Edisto Island, was founded 13 years ago by two Adrian Dominican sisters who saw the need for an ecumenical place of spirituality and self-discovery. Sea of Peace welcomes those seeking a few days’ retreat from the busy world they inhabit, those planning sabbaticals and those wishing to explore the depth of their spirituality. Retreats can be scheduled by the day, week or month, and include lodging and all meals. For an extra charge retreatants may be picked up at the Charleston International Airport. Call the center at 843-869-0513 or email sharonculhane@bellsouth.net for directions to the center, availability, or a brochure detailing Sea of Peace offerings.
